ISP advice
« on: September 08, 2010, 01:07:54 PM »
Anyone on Magnet 8 MB or Digiweb 8Mb?
To cut a long story short for years on and off everyones connection in the town slows down at peak hours.
Very definitely congestion,im tired waiting and hoping eircom will sort this so ive looked into whats available in the town.
It seems Magnet and Digiweb both offer 8Mb with a contention of 12:1 where as eircom is 48:1.
Ill jump at one of them if it was sure the lower contention would actually lead to less slowdown at peak hours.
I realize on paper it should, just wondering would it so in practice?
Anyone on Magnet or Digiweb 8Mb?
Maybe some of the tech heads can advise?
Would the better contention make a difference really?

The Magnet/Digiweb package is more expensive but for an improvement in evening time performance id jump at it,im constantly getting kicked from servers at peak hours and fps gaming impossible.
During the day things are perfect btw but my gaming is mostly done in the evenings.

As Eircom are the incumberant then I doubt changing will make any difference.  The others ISP's are using their network at the end of the day, and if there is congestion at your local exchange it wont change.  What it might allow you to do though is make a complaint to the new ISP who may get it resolved faster?

Few of us have suffered similarly recently, always from around 18:00 to 22:00 or so.  Tis painful if you are a gamer.

Are you able to get NTL broadband in your area?

Syco only eircom, Magnet,Digiweb and the usual resold eircom stuff.
Maybe NTL is similar? Is NTL UPC?
Bigger towns 15 miles away have 30 mb UPC etc :(

Not necessarily, my cub plays over wireless, doesnt affect him, though he is right over the top of the wireless signal.

oh yes i know the wireless dongle would be shite. It was just going to be a temporary till i could be bothered to re-wire it to down stairs.

I was also looking into some of those network blocks that you plug into the socket and it uses our houses wiring and then you plug a another one into the plug beside your computer. Does anyone know what these are like for latency and speed?

Can be problematic.  Just take a step back and work out a way to get cat 5 from a to b.

Dunno. Have them for wireless for the families laptops. Mate used his xbox over them, and thought that they were great.

I have a set for dLAN Ethernet plugs that work a treat for me as PC too far away from router to pick up via wireless.
