Title: Ireland V England iracing [video]
Post by: Cully on March 10, 2009, 12:04:53 PM
Hi chaps, just made this small video of a great race i had last week in the iracing world cup from round 5 at Laguna Seca Raceway.
Its a battle for second place that lasted for the final 29 laps of 31 lap race [video is 5 laps of the race]
Onboard with me in the Formula Mazda series,im the light green while the English guy is infront in british racing green so it was Ireland V England for second place and valuable points up for grabs towards the world cup of nations.
I hosted it on Vimeo as the quality is better than youtube, the vid doesnt do the games visuals any justice but trust me it looks incredible at full res.
Ofcourse iracing itself is a professional simulator so goes without saying the physics are as real as it gets as are the laser scanned tracks.

We hit our first Oval of the season this week at Milwaukee Mile.
Ive made a video of another great race i had there on Sunday if yas wish to see it.

very nice mate always liked laguna seca in any game also one of my favorite tracks in the world
pity your man was getting the power down so fast out of the corkscrew or you would have had him

would like to play game like iracing but my concentration level is terrible and i cant do a fast pace for more than 4 or 5 laps before i make a mistake and crash out or into someone

Yeah Grim he was a lot faster out of the corksrew.
Its very hard there as you HAVE TO trailbrake to stop the rear end snapping forward.
Then again the whole sim is incredibly tough but thats the attraction for me :)
I finished 3rd which im happy with, your SR [Safety Rating] is a big part of iracing, if you make contact with someone else or go off the track even a few inches you are given incident points against you.
Your SR is the only way to progress up the different classes, im class C now and ready for promotion to class B in 6 weeks.
You then have Irating which is how fast you are, this slots you in your division for the series im only division 8 of 12 divisions but i reckon my current iRating will get me to division 5 or 6 next season [each season lasts 12 weeks]
You usually end up racing guys with similar irating so therefore of similar skill level.

I got to race Dale Earnhardt jr a few weeks back in the nascar series.
Theres quite a few real life professional racers the race regularly.

Theres a few comments about it from some professionals here http://www.iracing.com/testimonials/index.php

I know Juan Pablo Montoya and Jacques Villeneuve are members too, ive never come across them though.
You have to register with your real name as its the name on the credit card you pay your subs with that is your racing and forum name.
Its quite mad seeing posts on the members forums from guys like Dale Earnhardt etc.

Heres some slick videos of iracing in action.

Im subscribing 7 months now and i just cant get enough of it.
Races are schedueled really well.
For example the formula mazda races i race in are every 2 hours at odd hours, 5,7,9,11 pm etc
Then other series are differing times ,the late model is 15 past the hour even hours - 2:15 4:15 etc
Same for other series, its really well done with qualifying sessions in between with open practice servers round the clock.
No Ai in this sim , just mano mano as they say :)

Grim you still have your G25?
Reason i ask is there is no official free trial on iracing.com itself but at the radical sportscar official website you can get a free trial if you wish.
You get a months trial with the basic package [see below ] but you also get the radical sportscar as part of this special offer trial, trust me that thing is awesome.
Heres link to radical site http://www.radicalsportscars.com/racing/virtual-racing your greeted with a nice Radical video of Silverstone in iRacing.

Heres what you get for the months trial along with the radical offer.
Subscription Packages

Reminds me to download Flatout 2.  I'm like Grim, I get bored a few laps in, would rather crash into people, especially Lucutus as he passes me.  I use the trademark Fairy Nudge to Rear Indicator.

Sold.  He was driving very defensively in that vid though.  Even brake testing you a couple of times!

Throw up your other vids till I have a look see.

The stamina of concentration level required to drive 30 laps without making many (bad) mistakes is a big attraction to me with driving games.  Love shaving seconds off laptimes etc.

Fairy, that nudge to rear right indicator is a curse you bast.  Even worse is your girly giggle over TS when you do it.

My sniggering starts about 30 seconds before the incident.  Once the plan comes into my mind the sniggering starts.

Heres 2 really close battles at this weeks formula mazda track which is Milwaukee Mile, the first oval of the seaon for these cars.
First one is the last 5 laps or so of a 75 lap race,i battled this guy for 2nd place for the whole race.
We had 3 cautions and safety car deployed for the cautions.
The last few laps we went 2 wide for full laps.
Incredibly intense and insane fun i must admit

Next up is a very close race riding onboard with me for some laps as i was stuck on this guys gear box for
75 lap race overtaking eachother quite a bit.
I did manage to get past after i pressured him into a mistake with 4 laps to go [well maybe he just made a mistake but i like to think otherwise :) ]and managed to finish 4th place.
Bare in mind that this guy races for the Florida club so appreciate the amazing netcode.
The guy in the vid above i was racing races for club Iberia [Spain and Portugal]

Where's the vids of you overtaking people instead of sucking down their exhaust fumes? :D

Here ya go Lucutus.

I started from pole made a rookie mistake  and took turn 2 too hard on cold tyres, cold tyres on rumble strip on such a tight uphill and offcamber turn is suicide.
I managed to keep it away from the barriers and rejoined to win the race.
Unfortunately i thought i had full reply but i dont,i have the first few laps of the race, some overtaking as i get down to business and work my way back up the field.
The race is at Infineon Raceway 3 weeks ago.

Heres another but onboard the Skip Barber car, its the class D car.
This race was 18 laps of swapping positions with this guy as we chase 6 th place.
Both of us got taken out on lap one after a big pile up.
We raced out of the pits after the crach all the way to the finish like this, actaully forgot i recorded this replay.
NOTE the steering inputs are all wrong for some reason and the dials aint working, ive heard there can be a bug like this with some replays.

I might add a few more later on, i think i have some of the other class C car the radical, i definitely have a good one of a win i had at Lime rock park in the mazda.
ill root it out and ad the best bits to a vid.

Heres some footage of my first win of the seaon in the mazda, i cant make a vid of full race so i just added the best bit of the race for me.
At the end of this clip i manage to pass 1st and 2nd place along the main straight approaching T1, i went through the middle of them and namaged to make the pass stick despite the bumps leading into T1.
This pass was wiyth 7 or so laps to go , i managed to pull away and win,its a memorable race for me as it was my first win of 09.

Word of advice if you get the trial guys, iracing is like no other, im simracing over 12 years now.
Ive played them all and nothing is as real as this thing, real world physics added to laser scanned tracks and road surfaces amount to a very very hard racing sim.

Also if you decide to subscribe after the month trial, the content i listed above is your starter pack, everything after that you pay for.
Every track and car for whatever series you want to run you pay for.
I admit to paying over 300 euros on content.
It is expensive but for any motorsports enthusiast its moneywell spent on a hobby.

Watch this preview of iracing, its from last year so you got to trust me when i say its been updated so much since this then.

More like it!  Nasty mistake alright, you'd imagine you could just bounce over that!

Like the way yer man just lets you past at the end of the vid, n1!

Will this run on an 8800GS and a P4 3.2Ghz, 2GB RAM?  Still waiting on a code from that site above...
Title: Re: Ireland V England iracing [video]
Post by: Cully on March 11, 2009, 11:50:00 AM
Yes it will run, the sim is very very scaleable.
Im using an 8800 GTS with quad core and 4 gig ram, im running at 1920X 1080 16Xaa 4X FSAA all maxed out except full shadows under cars and im getting 80-200 fps at those settings.
I turn off these particular shadows because with some races there are 30 other cars and it get a bit stuttery with all them cars and max shadows on my card, anything below 15 or so cars i can run max shadows,I might buy a new card soon.

The whole thing is auto configured for you, you will be well impressed with the presentation etc.
I havent even mentioned your stats etc, just watch the video above.

Do you guys have a wheel and pedal setup?
A pad just wont cut it here.

great, will give the trial thing a run once the code comes in and see how it goes.  Good reason to dust off the G25.
Title: Re: Ireland V England iracing [video]

Just a single lap vid of the radical at Barber sports park, this car is lightning fast and a massive challenge to keep on the track let alone run fast consistant laps.
I ran this lap just this morning to show you this car and whats probably one of my favourite road courses, its a hell of a challenge as your feathering the throttle constantly and constantly trailbraking.
A total blast of a car and a blast of a track.

ps: i figured out whats causing the steering wheel to behave like it is in some replays.
I recently bought a controller box for my G25 pedals.
Any replay i play thats older than when i got this controller box turns out like this, something to do with sensitivity with controller is far greater than before so replays before were with the old sensitivity, thats the bug i spoke of  :)
Title: Re: Ireland V England iracing [video]
Post by: [TiG]Lucutus on March 11, 2009, 12:31:01 PM
What does the controller box do for you?
Title: Re: Ireland V England iracing [video]
Post by: Cully on March 11, 2009, 12:42:07 PM
This is it.
http://leobodnar.com/products/DFPG25conn/

It effectively makes your pedal inputs more accurate.
On normal sims you would not notice a difference but in iracing it is.
Since i got it my laps times have come down by almost a full second in some cases, i can brake later and accelerate out of corners quicker.
It took some getting use to after months without it, i just couldnt comprehend braking later but with this i literally had to change my mindset of braking in particular.
Almost a second a lap doesnt sound much but its massive over race distance.

The G25 is the best budget setup on the market thus its the most popular but iracing is just so accurate in everything it models.
A lot of the guys in iracing use wheel and pedal setups that cost over a grand, a basic set of CST pedals will cost you 400 euros.
The G25 is the next best thing , the controller box just brings you a tiny step closer to what CST and similar pedals offer.

See the CST gear here http://www.cannonsimulationtechnologies.com/category-1.htm

figured out the practice anyway.  Give us your top tips for beginners there!
Title: Re: Ireland V England iracing [video]
Post by: Cully on March 12, 2009, 12:00:49 PM
First tip Lucutus is read everything in this link
http://members.iracing.com/membersite/member/instruction.jsp

My main tip is drive the cars as if you own them, this is not like anything you have ever experienced before, i think you will have guessed that by now :)
Practice and practice more, learn all the lines so you can run side by side with other cars, that goes for ovals and road courses.

Are you more interested in road or oval?
If road get used to the Solstace, practice hard in the rookie solstace at this weeks track, click on series navigate to schedule and see what this weeks track is [tracks cnahge over at around midnight on Saturday night].
Go to the forums and look at the section on rookie cars for tips and info.

Tip number one for the solstace is its a momentum car, only brake when you have too, its down on power but handles well so be incredibly smooth with your braking and steering inputs.

You can work on your SR [safety rating] right away.
Do time trials, this way your clean laps are rewarded with +SR, once you hit 4.00 SR in rookie class you can get promoted to advanced rookie which will let you drive a more powerfull and more fun car the skip barber [see vid i linked earlier in the thread]
When you can run laps without mistakes and at a decent pace your ready to race.
Rookie races are every hour on the hour i think.
Just remember this is as real as we are ever likely to get without actually doing the real thing - i really cant stress that enough, you need to experience this sim to believe it.
It really only opens up once you move up to advanced rookie and get into the skip barber, then later the mazda and radical.
The legends and solstace are designed to learn the basics of racecraft, learn this before going fast.
Thes 2 cars are there as a stepping stone and trust me you will be glad of the slow process once you get into the fast cars.

Also dont be afraid to hit the open practice servers,if you hit someone the incident points that show up are not effective in open practice.
Open practice is a great way to learn how to race in close proximity to other guys.
If you want get your SR up do time trials and races [clean races]

To join an open practice session make sure you have selected the series you wish to run then slick sessions and then on lest hand side you will see practics sessions and number of people in each session.
Join these and practice away without fear of hurting other peoples SR.
Whats your name ill add you to friends?

Syco, the sim auto configures your wheel and graphics for you.
It really is simply to set up.

n1 for the write up there, will have antoher run tonight.  I kicked off on a practice server on laguna seca in the pontiac last night, introduced myself to the ppl there and one of them (and over-friendly american lad, jim something), ran me around the track slowly a couple of times, was great to be welcomed in straight away, certainly a lot better than the "wtf noob!?" you'd get in other games.  ingame voice is handy, you use it?  (which key on the wheel bound?)

I'll fire it up again tonight and give it a go again.  Need a few hours on it with a clear head to suss it out, was too tired by the end last night.

I presume clean races implies "don't hit anyone!"?

thanks for the write up, I'll try some time trial tonight and a praccy session, see how I get on.  tried to add you as a buddy in it, couldn't see a way to from the drivers screen.  pm'd you mah name.
Title: Re: Ireland V England iracing [video]

Yeah the community is spot on.
The whole thing is managed and sanctioned by FIRST

FIRST is the global sanctioning body for internet racing conducted through and by iRacing.com. Its mission is to organize, facilitate and execute internet racing competitions, providing structure, consistency and fairness.

You can protest other racers for abusive behaviour and or wreckless driving.
Ive yet to see abusive behaviour however.
Yes they take it serious, apart from the best physics and netcode out there for a racing sim, its the clean racing thanks to the SR that is a massive draw and what simracers have wanted for years.
After years of painfull racing on public servers its a breath of fresh air to race on clean servers, if and when accidents happen you will more often get an apology instantly via voice comms or text but most prefer to do so via pm after the race as most only use voice comms during practice or under a safety car.
Some also use it to inform a leader which side to pass while being lapped or off the pace etc.
I use one of the buttons on the G25 shifter for voice comms, i use the left and right buttons on the wheel for look left/right.

I meant to mention this earlier, BIG TIPS -

1 - Use F3 while in any session with others on track, it tells you where they are on track.
2 - Make sure you have spotter turned ON in sounds menu, this is of immense use and saves you having to use look left/right buttons
Your crew chief will tell you "inside", "outside" "your in the middle 3 wide" etc.

Have this turned on all the time mate for both oval and road courses.
You will be working hard enough racing, gear changing, trailbraking etc to have to worry about looking left/right -the spotter is that good rarely use look left/right now.
Lately ive been using the left red button on wheel for voice comms and not using look left/right at all.

I took these 3 from a thread from iracing staff on the forums

1. Practice with friends. One of the biggest failings most sim drivers have, is the ability to drive in crowded conditions. Drive nose to tail and side by side until you are both comfortable. The more friends you can do it with the better, and you will learn to trust each other in tight situations

2. Learn to drive different lines through turns. The hot lap line you run in qualifying is fine for qualifying or when you are on a clear track. It doesnt work at the start of the race or in crowded condition. Learn the inside line and the outside line an know the braking points for these lines so you will be able to stay on thart side of the track with another car next to you

3. Situational awareness. Be aware of cars around you and what they are doing or trying to do. Be aware of what another driver MIGHT do and act accordingly. Vision in a sim is limited, so if you are not sure whether another car is next to you, then ASSUME there is one there. This might lose you a position in some cases, but it is better to be safe than wreck the race for a few people, yourself included

The community is outstanding and easily the best ive come across in any genre of gaming.
I sent ya a pm on members forums.

I time trialed in the legends rookie car on an oval last night,. put in about 28 'clean' laps, not especially fast or anything.

My SR rating went DOWN by .02!

This is gonna take some getting used to.

I just looked at your session stats, you done 31 laps and had 10 incident points, thats why SR went down a bit.
Time trials bring up your SR but at a lot slower rate than races.

Heres your stats for that session

Did you watch the video of the race?

Each lap takes 27 seconds :) Its an oval course.

The Formula Mazda is a class C car, class C races usually take about 45 minutes

Hi,
I need your full name to proceed. Can you please reply with it?

Please do this as soon as possible, otherwise you will have to wait for your code until Monday. Thanks!

That's the name for the trial.  You have to use your cc anyway after you get the promotional code, just to verify your ID, no charge applied.

Everyone races under their real name in this thing Mister J Syco.

BBL for some praccy rounds, would be good to get a training session with a few ppl from here

Had my first race there yesterday and it was a disaster. Every time I tried to get out of the way on the high line (Oval) I'd skid and end up all over the place, both taking out myself and others :/

It's a damn tough sim.

Grim you gotta remember these guys are into this type of simracing for years.
3 seconds off is not bad at all for a rookie just starting out-its pretty good infact.
I didnt realise you had joined too.

Molc are you really using  pad?

ALso lads if anyone is thinking of subscribing and taking things further remember to takr advantage of some of the promotional offers.
See here http://members.iracing.com/membersite/member/Promotions.do

I like the one that if you buy 6 items ,trakcs and/or cars you get 30% off full cost.

If you lads were to get promoted to class D you can then run the skip barber series which is a great fun series.
Rookie promotions are every 4 weeks as opposed to 12 weeks for other classes so that means in 3 weeks or so yee can race the skip barber,i think its 4 weeks  but could be less.

Would like some open wheel action, see how it goes, still unsure if I'll lay down cash for it...takes a lot of patience to master.

Grim has taken to it better than me, I'm only running lime rock in consistent laps of 1.09 to 1.12 or so.

molc, you raced too early! I've only been running the practice sessions, trying to get my times up to race competitively, I reckon a 1.04 on lime rock would be well enough.  Also, it's very useful with a few on the praccie track for learning how to deal with traffic.

syco, I think "some guy" has to check his email and do all the promotion codes in a manual batch.

Yeah I thought I was ready. Was about .5 - 1 second off the pace on the oval so thought it would be fine. Boy did I get a suprise when there was 10 other cars on the track! II just paniced and made a mess:)

Cully, got a lend of one of the xbox wheels so I have that at least.

Might take another go later i nthe week on lime rock. I prefer the car and track to the oval. Plus, I'm safer:P

Dang. The Playstation wheel I have, which I was going to use vie the Playstation-USB Adapter, wasn't picked up, so no racing as of yet :(

/edit
Got it working. There was a "DuelShock" switch on the controller, and it didn't sem to like that :/

The controller is a "Gamester" controller, with two pedals, paddle things on the side of the wheel for the gears, so it's all good :D

It was made in the Playstation One era.

Am i right in thinking apart from Tony you guys that joined up are Robert Byrne [Grim] , Paul Cockburn [Molc or Syco]  ?
I might join yas in some solstace practice later if anyone on.

Just wait till yas get promoted to Skip Barber, this is when the real fun starts in anger.
I suggest you run time trials or races so you get your SR above 4.0, that way you will be promoted to advanced rookie when its promotion time, which is pretty soon i think.

If you go with time trials just be clean with 0 incidents and your SR will improve, speed is NOT an issue while time trialing for SR.
Its only an issue if your looking for TT rating, this is not needed to climb up the classes so stick to clean laps if you can.

If you decide to race to work on SR then dont qualify and jsut join races at back of grid, take it easy and run a clean race.

SR gain/loss in a race is at a far greater rate than time trials so if you feel you can run clean without too much risk to others then i recomend some races.
Get your SR to 4.99 which is the max then you can really have a go in races as you will never lose enough SR in a rookie race to drop you back down below the magic 4.0

Aye they are small for the small cars, wait till you hit the large ones and the super speedways.
Nothing like racing 220 mph  inches apart while you wrestle with the 800 horse power Impala SS COT.

Added you to friends Colm :)

Will try some time trials after a praccie session later so, maybe a race or two, although, there's not a lot of people racing the solstice rookie atm, and I presume you need at least a minimum amount of cars on the track?

Do you have to run the whole time trial session, or can you quit after the 10 laps?

syco would be Jerry *something*, not sure who Paul cockburn is.

Title: Re: Ireland V England iracing [video]
Post by: Cully on March 18, 2009, 03:11:45 PM
Yes mate run the full time trial session.
Use your F1 screen to watch how many laps you need complete for a full clean session.
Its tedious but the safest way to gain SR.
Normally there wouldnt be a need but 2 or 3 weeks back the rookies got promoted so rookies are due promotion again very soon.
The rookies get promoted every 4 weeks where as other classes is every 12 weeks.

Ok just to be sure i checked to sporting code for what SR you need for advanced rookie.

2.9.5. Advanced Rookie Series are open to Rookie license holders who have achieved a Safety Rating of 3.00 or higher and to drivers holding a Class D or above license.

NOTE : you can race Class D cars once you get SR of 4.0 even when you are an advanced rookie, the skip barber is Class D.

ALso dont forget you minimum participation requirement.
if you havent reached the requirement you wont be promoted, its something like 4 official sessions, i cant remember.
See section 2.4 of sporting code

2.4.1. Rookies are required to complete at least four official Time Trial sessions OR two official Race Sessions during the current 12-week racing season in order to earn a Class D license (provided their safety record meets the minimum standard) in a particular category.

For quick reference click series tab then click on the class tab and MPR tab for more info for requirements for each class and series etc.

Had my first race last night, grim was in as well, he left after the first turn in anger when someone forced him off the track *snigger*.

I stuck with it untill the 16th lap, then I missed my driving line while trying to give way to faster drivers and ended up crashing into the barriers.  Fun though, enjoyed it.

SR goes up way quicker than time trials, even if you dont finish the race.

It is expensive yes but trust me Grim once you sit into that Skip Barber you will be addicted for life like me :)
Im back racing the skippy mostly these days,i seem to get a lot more close races in the skippy than other series, plus the fact i struggle in the longer races with my fucked up leg.

Grim you could just buy the track you need this week and then the next ones later?

Forgot to say, take a look at our region leader board for the world cup, we are ahead of England and in 2nd place to France :) the season ends this Saturday.

Damn just noticed i dropped down from the top 5 points scorer for our club,i was in 5th for a while :)

Come on Grim, get into that skippy and lets get us on the track together for some practice sessions.

pretty happy with myself done qualifying and started second on the grid got a good start and held my position first few laps i was concentrating on creating a gap between me and the guy in third but by the time i did the guy in the lead had created a gap to me of about 3 seconds it grew and shrunk untill lap 18 when accelerating out of the last corner he spun which gave me a lead of about six seconds with 7 laps to go so i decided to pace my self to the end and i won by about 3 seconds

when i came aroud the last turn to find a car spun i was shocked i thought it was a back marker but i didn't notice untill i got past him that there was no car in front of me anymore then the panic set in i calmed myself down paced myself and finished

I accidentally came across this video and recognised myself from the race and incidents etc so i contacted the guy that made video to ask.
Turns out it was Thomas Nanzer [uses a different name on youtube] that i had a great race with during the week in the DP,Radical advanced Solstice multi class races :)
Im in the DP that he is following [in Irish colours] as we pass quite a few cars,i got my right rear on the dirt on exit from T1/T2 ans with so much horsepower she just spun on me, silly mistake with only 3 laps to go in the session lol.
