cat5e unshielded, or cat6

http://www.cablemonkey.co.uk/acatalog/RJ45_Boot.html is what a boot is(the plastic bit that comes up around the rj45 connector), so if you want one on the cable already kinda depends on what your using them for....

well its mostly to avoid damaging the rj45, but unless your planning on doing crimping with the cables or that i'd probably get it booted should survive longer...

Speak to someone at yer college and they'll fix you up.  Either borrow a crimper and crimp the ends when you have the cable in, or better still two tidy surface mount boxes and some network points, they can be wired like a phone extension using a termination tool.

From memory B&Q or Home base do a kit at around ?35 for everything you need more or less:

Networking starter kit

fyi only tool needed is the crimper, the sockets are generally self-crimping (though i suspect you know that, but for others...)

if you can go as dermot suggests it would be the best approach(i've done it in a few places when i'm not lazy), can be quite neat little box and then just use small cat5e cables on either end to plug them into switch/pc/dsl...
