New rig advice

Hey lads, the brother is looking at getting a new rig for gaming.
I said id ask you lot what yas think.
Its a build from overclockers, he wants to get them to build it.


- Case: Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case   
- Power Supply: OCZ StealthXStream II 600W                 
- CPU: Intel Core i5 760 2.80GHz overclocked to 4.00GHz 
- Motherboard: Asus P7P55-M Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard
- Cooler: Akasa Venom CPU Cooler
- RAM: Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
- Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
- Graphics Card: gtx 480
- Sound: High Definition 7.1 Onboard Sound Card
- Optical Drive: 22x DVD+RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter


I was thinking maybe the latest antec or coolermaster case would a better choice for a case? i have the antec 900 and its very nice.
Also is the gtx 480 top end? if so im not sure he needs it with his 23 " monitor running native res of 1920X1080 , would a gtx 460 be better value/performance?
Hes not after a beast of a rig but something around the 1k euro mark that can perform pretty well.

Nice build. 

The case is fine, I built mine into one of those and it works very well, no problems, and no disadvantages.

The GFX480 is pretty pricey alright, I picked up an ATi 5850 as a step below the top end of cards at the time and it's handled everything I've thrown at it superbly, even has low noise when under load. When the time comes that I need a few more fps, I can overclock it to 5870 levels, if I can bear the fan going all the time... :)

I think you're right at price/perfomance with a GTX460, the jump to a GTX465 isn't worth the money, and if you want to keep the budget at 1k, blowing half of it on a GTX480 is not the way to go.

Consider a slightly higher specced/power output PSU, it will pay you back in dividends in future when you decide to fill the case with hard drives or add another card for SLi or Crossfire, you won't have to worry about the PSU.

Finally, I would suggest building it himself, putting PC's together is easier than lego, plenty of help online and even direct from oc.co.uk if you have to call them, they're pretty good.

nice build but i would make some changes

1st would be the psu 600w wont quite cut it imo (and from past experience ocz are a bit meh) i would go with this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-018-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1084 same psu i have excellent quality and modular so no spare cable mess plus its corsair which imo are one of the best you can currently buy.

2nd is the motherboard asus are fine and make great boards but i would personally go with gigabyte http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-203-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1495 they are in a different league in terms of quality and features

3rd would be the graphics card the 480gtx is faster than the ati 5870 but only by around 10% but to get the extra % it uses twice the power 300w as opposed to 150w so imo the 5870 is the better card and cheaper http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-167-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1502

Aye, tell us what happened with oc.co.uk?

The board is a mATX, I don't know if that's intentional?  Case is fine for it though, so happy days.
