question
« on: May 29, 2009, 11:42:50 AM »
My bro in law is having a problem with his pc.

sometimes it will start as normal but sometimes all the fans etc will just power up and continue to run it doesnt seem to be making the normal sounds on boot up just kind of stays idle with the fans spinning but nothing appears on screen. He says if he turns the pc off at the wall and presses the restart button on the tower it will at some stage boot up like normal. happens often i think.

am thinking hard drive?

Hard drive would mean he can see the boid screen, which you don't suggest is true. Sounds like a loose/ dodgy card somewhere.

I had the same seemingly random problem with my soundcard. Once I took it out, all problems went away. He should try taking things out a board at a time and see if that helps.

The other issue could be dodge power upply or too much power draw, stopping the machine from getting to the BIOS screen even. This normally only shows when you turn on, and goes away on a soft reset.
