Like with The Matrix film where they gave backstory in the Animatrix, Lucas wanted the same and got in Genndy Tartakovsky of Samurai Jack fame as well as Dexter's Laboratory and apparently Powerpuff Girls too.

The first volume was 20 5-minute episodes of fun, volume2 is 5 12-minute episodes and steps up the pace, racing towards the film with interesting info and setting the scene.

Being StarWars, membership of StarWars.com is important to view past episodes but for a short while after airing the eopisodes are free to all on:

Volume2 is currently available to watch, streamed Quicktime format and god knows how long they'll last.
It starts at episode 21 with the evil General Greivous from the new film after crushing a Republic battle group and hunting the Jedi Commanders.
They called for help so the Elite Arc Troopers turn up, all business-like.

Check out the first one at least.
The episodes are quite varied and the last episode or two explains the start of the next film.
And it ain't no happy kiddies crap with long-eared prats.

5 minute bursts?
I'm watching it in 30 minute bursts, on Toonami. Watched it up to when Luke goes on his cow, into the snow (along the wind, up the icy river, and into the cave), and find the big robot thing, which is enslaving the hunters. Very nice.

The Sith

An ancient order of Force-practitioners devoted to the dark side and determined to destroy the Jedi, the Sith were a menace long thought extinct. The current incarnation of the Sith is the result of a rogue Jedi dissident from the order. Two thousand years ago, this Jedi had come to the understanding that the true power of the Force lay not through contemplation and passivity. Only by tapping its dark side could its true potential be gained. The Jedi Council at the time balked at this new direction. The Dark Jedi was outcast, but he eventually gained followers to his new order. Awakening beliefs from the dark past, the new Sith cult continued to grow. With the promise of new powers attainable by tapping into the hateful energies of the dark side, it was only a matter of time before the order self-destructed. Internecine struggle by power-hungry Sith practioners dwindled their numbers.
