Hello Gentlemen,
Basically my computer crashes in almost all my games except COD BO and COD2.
its strange the way it now crashes in cod4 even though it is an older game but aye, think i need a new graphics card because its terribly low.
One person suggested i was gettin the crashes because maybe my graphics card wasn't suitable for a 64 bit system?
Any suggestions?
I've a:
windows 7 home premium 64-bit
Processor: intel(R) quad(TM)2 CPU q3800 @ 2.5GHz (4CPUs), ~2.5GHz
Memory:4096MB RAM
DX11
Current graphics card : nvidia Geforce GT240
would appreciate any advice! :) thanks
-
whats your budget?
-
about ?200?
-
Probably the best card in that price bracket is the GTX 560ti Abe bought one just before release there and is playing away no bother

also make sure you have at least one of these on your psu

Hello Gentlemen,
Basically my computer crashes in almost all my games except COD BO and COD2.
Right-click on "My Computer" and click on "Manage", and then goto "Event Viewer" and then to "Windows Logs", and click on "Application". Goto the time that the last crash was, and tell us what the error is.
-
The error is cheap ass gfx card.
-
560ti can handle bf3 with no problem , and its easy on the pocket also
-
thanks lads for the help. its my birthday on thursday so i shall have some monies for my pocket to spend wisely.
Whats that thing for my psu i need? lol
cheers psyco, i havent had a crash in a while but will let you know what the craic is next time i do.
-
Your current PSU (Power Supply) might not supply enough power to run the new card, more modern cards are power hungry. I think your machine is an off the shelf PC, and they tend to have a lower end PSU. So if you can afford it upgrade your PSU as well.
-
So if you can afford it upgrade your PSU as well.
And if you have a Dell probably a new case as well, as Dell usually have f?cked up PSU power connector hole positions that are usually not in the same place as "usual" PSU holes :/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ib_AJQRWdE&feature=feedu
-
right so how do i update my psu? :s
-
need more details maybe a picture of the computer with the side panel off and some close ups of the psu to give an idea of what were dealing with hardware wise
-
right so how do i update my psu? :s
What make and model of case do you have, or if you got it pre-built, what's the make and model of the PC?
-
Its a packard bell
model : ixtreme M3720
-
from what i can find on the interweb it seems to use this psu which looks like a normal atx http://www.blackmoreit.com/products/packard-bell-ixtreme-ixtreme-m3720/dsdps-250ab-22-delta-electronics-dps-250ab-22-250w-atx-power-supply.html but wouldn't be enough to run a gtx 560
but the fact that its a normal atx form psu means it should be easily upgradeable to somthing like this http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-psu-ocz-technology-zs-series-ocz-zs550w-uk-86-eff-80-plus-bronze-sli-crossfire-eps-12v-queit-fa
maybe even fran could help you :P

I googled the case, and from looking at 01:40 of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq6Td637CrU I can say that it looks like the above PSU will be able to fit no problem (screw holes match up). As the PSU has 20+4 holes it'll fit the board.
-
the source of the crashes is kernel-power according to logs.
so all i need is that upgrade for my psu?
-
the source of the crashes is kernel-power according to logs.
Do you have a onboard sound card and a PCI soundcard? If you use the PCI soundcard, turn off the onboard sound in the BIOS. If you only have the onboard sound card, update it.
-
how do i check what sound card i have? lol
-
Your sound card is more than likely onboard. The audio connections will be on the backplate of the main board?
-
alright lads, really did take the biscuit in gettin my computer back to shape. but good news for all, my loan came through today. as soon as exams are over ill be buying bf3 (and a new power supply w.graphics card) and pwning all you oldies.
stay safe
xx
-
You coming down to the lan at all?
-
no sorry i cant, its in the middle of my exam timetable sorry :(
-
Stalker i think you need a dad can do this all for you :P
-
PS is that you we see on TV at the moment?
-
tv? what? haha. bought a can of compressed air online and got it the other day. its marvellous. ordering that power supply soon
-
Thought I seen you on some discussion about NI Students and current economic crisis etc!
-
Thought I seen you on some discussion about NI Students and current economic crisis etc!
hah! me? never!
Right so If i buy this power supply now, do i have to do some DIY to my computer? because its an off the shelf computer.
-
gief pictures and we can tell you
-
because its an off the shelf computer.
Make & model of the case/PC please.
-
ok I'll check now.
-
power supply I have on my computer is 220-240 v, 3.15A, 50hz . eeeek
Make and model : Packard Bell, ixtreme M3720
If i do buy that power suplly mentioned earlier in this thread, and replace it with the one i have now, will my computer start up as normal when the upgrade is done, or would i have to do anything else?
Here's a few pictures.

Here's a few pictures.
Looks like a standard hole, with the screw points at the right places, so a new PSU should be able to fit there with no hassle.
Get a modular PSU if you can. If you click here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vm_2RG61hhk) you'll see the benefits of a modular PSU over a non-modular PSU.
-
The one i currently have is non-modular i think. would that make a difference with respect to wires to the rest of the case?
And do i simply disconnect the wires coming from my current psu to the other parts of the computer?
Sorry but i'm clueless when it comes to things like these.
-

It may mean that you'll have cables left over. Cable ties can be handy to tidy up excess cables.

Yes. Please note what cables are plugged in where on the motherboard, namly the big long one (ATX power) and the one for your AMD or Pentium CPU (check which one from the PSU goes into it), and the various graphic card and hard-drive power cables.
-
Nice deal there http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-241-CM&utm_source=newsletter20120222&utm_medium=email (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-241-CM&utm_source=newsletter20120222&utm_medium=email)
-
funds wise i can splash about 200-220 quid on a psu and graphics card.
I don't think a modular psu would fit in my current computer. And i think ill get the 560TI
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-173-OK&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1341
just looking around for a non-modular psu that should be alright
-
I don't think a modular psu would fit in my current computer.
Um, as far as I can tell, a modular and non-modular PSU can be the same size. The only difference would be that you'd have less cables coming from the modular PSU. Open to correction on that, though.
-
ive the 560ti great card and great price
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-247-AS (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-247-AS)
check it out on amazon its 10quid cheaper than overclockers
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-GeForce-560TI-DirectCUII-Graphics/dp/B004K8R8DA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330021158&sr=8-1 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-GeForce-560TI-DirectCUII-Graphics/dp/B004K8R8DA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330021158&sr=8-1)
the above card has 2 fans so less strain on cooling and noise. tho the ocuk stuff is ment 2 be grand going by what i hear from our hardware specialist tig.grim
ps. the 560 cards are very big cards length wise so check ur case for room etc
-
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-045-OK
right so im interested in this psu but I can't find out what size it is or compatibility? am i Blind or just stupid?
cheers for the amazon link. I think i'll get that, just need to check measurements, but should be ok.
-
nearly all atx psu's are the same size apart from the 1000w + ones which are huge, personally id go with this only a tenner more and much better quality http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-048-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1084
-
wouldn't bother with modular either as fantastically tidy as they are when your on a budget they aren't worth the extra expense
-
bought the psu for wed delivery. Ill buy the 560TI once i get the psu installed ok.
Thanks for all the help guys, I appreciate it!

Switch it off. Pull the power cord out, press the "on" switch 3 times, to ensure there's no power at all left. Touch a wooden table or something, to ensure you have no static on ye.
-
the two connectors originally connected to my motherboard were the normal 2x10 one and this other 2x2 one......
...the new power supply doesnt have a 2x2 one. it was 2 3x2 ones with 2 2x1 connectors.
uh oh. am i screwed?

Sorry made a mistake.

I think i've got the wrong one ffs. any help? lol
-
also make sure you have at least one of these on your psu
(http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff125/Robert_Byrne1/st60f13.jpg)
I Have two of them on my newly bought one. But none on my old one. The old one had a 2x2 mini slot on the motherboard, which i dont know what it is for.
Does this mean my new psu is useless? lol
-
those 3x2 ones are for the graphics card power there should be a 4x2 one that splits into two 2x2s
-
omg grim. you are my hero. and I am a retard.
-
ok all installed and well. But i got another Black Screen crash.
I'm having a look through stuff on my computer and found that there was a yellow sign beside a 'PCI Device' in 'Other Devices' on my device manager.
It's saying that.
"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver."
when i click update driver, it attempts to find the driver online and does nothing but say:
"windows could not find driver software for your device
If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software."
Im on the site but am finding very little.
Im continuing but having no luck
-
Delete the PCI device, close the window (the window, not Windows7 itself) and install the driver that you have downloaded from the website (and/or that you got on the CD, but you should install the latest stable driver that you can get).
-
The thing is, I dont actually know what driver I have to download.
Looking at its properties I have,
Device Description : PCI Device
Location Paths : PCIROOT(0)#PCI(0A00)#PCI(0400)
Physical Device Object Name : \Device\NTPNP_PCI0023
location information : PCI bus 1, device 4, function 0
The Install date is the 3/3/2012. which was the day I put my newly psu in.
Maybe its something to do with that?
-
Do you have a "Texas Instruments SD card reader" installed? Did you plug anything out from the motherboard that is connected to the PC case, and then plug it in again?
-
No I don't think so. Searched computer and programs and was not there.
And the only things I plugged out was the cables belonging to the psu, and of course the fan plug, but i reconnected it fine.
those 3x2 ones are for the graphics card power there should be a 4x2 one that splits into two 2x2s
my current graphics card has not got a pci express connecter. Could also be a possibility to why I'm gettin crashes?

Sorry, I meant do you have any card readers plugged into the machine?

What sort of power connection does it have? It should have a 6 pin or 8 pin (or both) connector for power...
-
I have absolutely no idea if i do have a card reader or not. sorry im useless.
Right, so my graphics card is so terrible is has no power connecters. which means that my new psu isnt doing anything different to it haha.
That has to be the answer to my problem.
-
Right, so my graphics card is so terrible is has no power connecters.
You say you have a 560TI?
If you look at the image, to the right, you'll see two 2*3 power connections. You need to put the power connections into there to make it work correctly.
If your card doesn't look like this, please take a photo of it, and link it to use here, as it seems you don't have a 560TI. Where did you buy it from?

No the 560 TI is the one Im going to get.
I've a Nvidia geforce GT 240. Got it in pc world years ago. I dont think it has power connectors. fml
-
Ah, gotcha. The 240 seems to be dead. If you can't see post (or the BIOS) with it, drivers won't help ye.
-
So you reckon if i get the 560TI everything will be sorted? lol
-
Forgot to Thank all of you for the advice a couple of months ago.
I got the 560Ti installed and every game is working with no crashing problems.
Cheers lads, I appreciate it! :salute:
-
So get on and play some games with us then..... That ARMA2 mod is right up your steet tbh!!!
-
