Title: new build issues
Post by: [TiG]Suppafly on March 04, 2012, 09:33:33 AM
So i finally got my new build all put together after so other minor hardware legacy issues and now when i turn it on i don't get anything on the screen. It sounds like everything is booting up fine and there is power going to the motherboard and video card. Checked the connections from the motherboard to the video card and also from the video card to the monitor. all seem fine. Not sure what else to check

Look on the back of the video card when it's on, and see if there are any LED lights on: these sometimes help troubleshoot the problem. What's the gfx card, and what PSU do you have? ANd has the gfx card being tried with another machine, and/or can you try it with another machine?

The gfx card is a geforce 280gtx 1GB and the PSU is a corsair HW 650.

It did work before initially when i built it first time, but i had to add a new cd-rom drive so i could reinstall wndows on my ssd drive, so i think i dunno if i knocked out some wires, but i checked everything and its all plugged in. I'll have a look at the back and see if there are any lights coming on at the back. i can see there is power going to the gfx card card the fan is spinning on it and there are some lights inside the gfx card on

Checked the lights on the back of the gfx card and there is a green light on it. The gfx card works fine as i had it running before i had to switch out the cd-rom drive as it had a ribbon cable for power that my motherboard no longer supported so i had to get a sata one. That's why i think it may just be some loose cables are cables in the wrong spot maybe. But i check them all to see that they were plugged in right

I take it you've checked it with the cd-rom drive not connected at all?

i'll check it with the cd-rom unpluged.

Tony, i don't hear any any beeps. I'll double check though.

It seems like its booting up fine and the screen just isn't coming on as i can hear the hard drive spinning away and loading stuff

something small that i overlooked :).

Another think i would like to tweak on my primary drive the 120GB SSD drive. I wanted to see about reducing the amount of pagefile it has. It is currently set to 16GB, but i was thinking of putting it done to 1GB as i have 16GBs of actually RAM in the system so don't think it would ever spill over into the pagefile. Also I wanted to get rid of the hibernation file (hyperfil.sys) as I have sleep mode disabled. The reason for doing both of these is that they are using 29.9GBs between them of expensive SSD space!

So what do you guys think? Would it be ok to remove the hibernation file and redue the pagefile to 1GB or less?

Also other than dragging acorss the origin games folder and steamapps folders for my games, bookmarks is there anything else i might be forgetting to transfer before formatting the old windows partion i have?

Also what was the default location for GTA 4 to store the save games files? I might have a look back it that again if i can find my saved game files for it :)
