Community Update - 3/21/06

Hi BF fans,

Today we have some really big news to share with you. The more sniper-eyed of you out there will probably already know, but we're currently hard at work developing "Battlefield 2142", which is scheduled for release this Autumn. As you'll have guessed, this is a departure for the BF series as we're going into the future - something that a lot of you wanted to see happen in the BF universe. We're creating a ton of cool features that you won't have seen in any BF before, including cloaking devices, mines that follow you, awesome new rifles, guns and grenades, and of course, MECHS! We're developing this here in DICE Stockholm while the DICE Canada studio will be hard at work on a 1.3 update for Battlefield 2, as well as the Armoured Fury Booster Pack.

There'll be an "official" press release later on this week but we know that you guys need to know first. Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on how 2142 is coming along.

The BF2142 Team

P.S. Snoken - vi har sett fram emot Mine 2 och kan lugnt s?ga att vi inte blev besvikna!

EA AND DIGITAL ILLUSIONS ANNOUNCE BATTLEFIELD 2142 FOR PC

All-new Title from the Award-winning Battlefield Franchise to be set in the Future

Redwood City, Calif. ? March 22, 2006 ? Fight an all-out war for survival in the year 2142. Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Sweden-based developer, Digital Illusions, today announced development of the next installment in the award-winning Battlefield? franchise, Battlefield 2142?. The ground-breaking first-person shooter is scheduled to ship this fall for the PC.

The year is 2142, and the dawn of a new Ice age has thrown the world into a panic. The math is simple and brutal: The soil not covered by ice can only feed a fraction of the Earth?s population. Some will live, most will die. In Battlefield 2142, players will choose to fight for one of two military superpowers in an epic battle for survival, the European Union or the newly formed Pan Asian Coalition. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players will also do battle using some of the most imposing vehicles known to man. Massive battle Mechs wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When facing one of these new behemoths, players will need to use their wits and an arsenal of new countermeasures like EMP grenades to level the playing field.

"Battlefield has long been synonymous with innovative, best-of-breed online multiplayer action," said Sean Decker, Executive Producer, DICE. "By stepping into the future with Battlefield 2142, the team at DICE has reinvented the rules of engagement for the next century.?

Team play features allow up to 64 players to enter the action on the front lines as part of a formal squad, or work behind the scenes in Commander Mode to direct the strategic assaults of their teammates. With in-game success, players increase their rank and unlock awards, including new weapons, medals and more, delivering the most comprehensive and flexible persistence in the Battlefield universe to date. TBH, that mech looks like one of the smaller mechs from MechWarrior, which was one hell of a damn sweet game.

Imagine a mod with just mechs? Sweet!

Again I wonder - BF was all about the ground troups having a decent chance. A MEC has 4x gattling cannons strapped to it's arms... I wonder how a trouper will fare now...

Whats with all the bitching and the whining?
Thats why companies exist: To make money. Why fault any company just because they are trying to introduce new products and increase profit?

Now I know that patches are a legitimate expectation from a game company to support their product, and they should be a priority for fixing bugs / issues that make end customers unable to use their products, and I believe EA / DICE have done so with BF2. For instance they fixed the 1.2 patch with 1.21 before releasing Euro Forces. People who are unhappy with the state of the game / balance / "muppettiness" /(gaymores etc) may be right, but this isnt an outcome of poor patching support or wanting to "skip ahead" to 2142 or the booster packs.

Sure there are things I wish were better about BF2. I really hope they address the claymore range in the next patch (im doubtful though) for one thing. I dont like how a couple of engineers in vehicles and a commander can dominate maps at times. The solution - probably play a game without vehicles or stick to the infantry servers. There is a cool one by the way DDD infantery v0.7 with maps customized for infantry.

In the end, I dont think "BF2 is dead" like people are saying, but I do agree that the level of post initial development support is decreased - but by far not to the point of non playability.
