im thinking of upgrading my comp big time eg new main board at the moment im running :

main board : gigabyte ga7va-xp

cpu : 2800+ sempron @ 333 fsb

graphics card : nvidia (xpert vision) geforce 5900xt

ram : 2 256 sticks of ddr 266 running at 333ddr speeds and a new stick of kingston 512 value ram ddr 400 underclocked to ddr 333

sound card : sound blaster audigy (oem)

harddrives : 1 ibm drive @ 13 gig 7200 rpm 2mb cache :( the other drives are same for cache and rpm a samsung 160 gig and a 40 gig i think the 40 gig is ibm as well.

ive got a shit psu mercury 400 watt psu its strugling to hell it only has 17 amps on the 12 volt rail

ive got a dvd player and cd writer in rig as well and a themaltake xaser v case so plenty cooling.

im thinking of saving up 300 pounds and buying a athloin 64 board with a 939 socket an cpu and new psu and err another stick of the ddr 400 mem then ill need a pci express graphics card...

any suggestions on how to boost my current rig or ideas for a new one with a budget of about 300 pounds would be grand :)

I have a 400 watt PSU and it's more than enough to run my X800XL so if you kept the same psu you qould save a small bit. What I would do is get a new mobo (socket 939) with a socket 939 processor and get an x800 graphics card because they are very powerful and a very good price. Keep everything else that's what I done about 3 months ago and it cost about ?350.

Btw if you live around Glasgow I know a good place where you can get your computer upgraded if you don't know how to do it yourself.

well, if i were you i would go for an intel MB a 925XE or a 915, this is 775 socket so only intels are allowed, however the intel cpus' are cheeper and allthough the amd ones are better, the performance differance is not that much (you dont realy see a big differance...). both the Mb's that i have suggested have PCI-e on them so there is no problem there, what you mihgt want is to get something like a x850 pro or a x800 xt, or maby a 6800 ultra or GT..., the Ram is a problem, most of the new boards only accept the DDR2 ram so (AMD boards included), so realy if ya want to get the best out of it unfortunatly it means upgrading to DDR2 ram......

as i keep on pushing, check this site for prices (even just for comparison) www.cogestra.com (its a swiss site but its all in English)

thanks for advice guys tho im wanting to get a cheap a64
as 64 bit stuff is just around the corner and the 939 socket would give me some future proofing.

i know you can get semprons on the 754 socket a64 boards can you get them on socket 939?

i dont want to skimp out on the mother board but im willing to buy cheap cpu etc to start with as long as the board is good for future upgrades.
