Question about TFTs.
« on: January 12, 2005, 04:38:59 PM »
Quick one for all you technophiles. What are TFTs like for gaming?I seem to hear so much about them being crap and having a "ghosting" effect.
Any way Ive been offered a 19"(12ms response time I think)for a ridiculously cheap price and kinda need an a definitive answer ASAP.
Any way thanks,
Richie.

I have a 19" 16ms benq monitor and its fine. very hard to notice any ghosting.. need a good graphics card to get the best out of it as the native resolution is going to be 1280x1024. so for best quality of games you will need to play at that resolution.

12ms should be fine, some people can't see any ghosting even at 25ms.

Thanks lads.I think Ill buy it so.19" is the equivalent of what size CRT?21" is it.Its native Res is 1280x1024 will my 9700pro be ok on this?Or what exactly does this upscaling look like considering that I run most game at 1024x768.Trying to hold off on a graphics card upgrade until I need a new mobo and cpu(want to really go PCI-E).Or what is the best AGP card out there?

You sound like you have the plan worked out in your head already.
That TFT sounds like the way to go alright.
Nice one mate.

Ok need one more small bit of help.It turns out that I have a choice of a 19 or a 17.
The 19" is this one :   http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?TabPage=overview&sku=21655&spagenum=&category_id=211&brandid=56&k=&c=ie&l=en&cs=iedhs1&mnf=&prst=&prEnd=&mnfsku=&orderby=&searchtype=&pageb4search=&page=productlisting.aspx&instock=&refurbished=

And the 17" is this one:   http://shopping.zdnet.co.uk/shopping/monitors/lcd-flat-panel/0,20000327,20514333p,00.htm

Which one do you lot recommend for gaming.I really like the 19"but if its a shit monitor Id prefer to go with the 17".
Thanks
Richie

Well, here is how I see it, but bear in mind, im still a CRT man and am by no means an expert.

The 19" monitor has about 15% less brightness but about 10% more contrast. It also has a response rate that is nearly half that of the 17". The way I understand it, the brightness level will only be noticeable if you have a high amount of background lighting in the room, but assuming this is a gaming machine, you probably have it set up in a nice area to avoid light anyways. The lower response time is probably the most crucial for high frame rate gaming. So in my opinion, the 19" is the one to go with.

Were I you, Id do some research on the web about brightness ratings etc.... Good luck!

Lads, my CRT is making a high pitched whine and I think it about to explode in my face. I like CRT, should I stick with it and get a 19"?? Is CRT better than TFT?? I think it is, but you guys are using TFT's and your opinion would help.

CRT's give a far better picture.  TFT's are far better for concerned wives etc who dont want large monitors in the house.

The viewable area of a 17" TFT is comparable to that of a 19" CRT, or so they say.

PS Valen we are having a lan party next weekend at my house in case you didnt know.  See topics in TiG Lan.
